So Mr. landlord’s brother tells me there was a f’up on Saturday and the electrician is coming today, I will definitely have hot water by the end of today, it will all be done! Electrician arrives at 8:30 (I just barely woke up). Get home from work this evening, excited and looking forward to a hot bath and yes, I have hot water. But is this what you call a “job done”? (Notice the cable, that’s just about the only thing that distinguishes these photos from the previous ones)

The rest of my flat looks like the photos I’ve already posted, just add a fat cable into the holes. Oh, and this looks like a really slick solution:

So my landlord was supposed to fix the furnace in my bathroom because right now, all I can do is wash up with ice cold water - we’re talking arctic, I look like the ice-carved version of Medusa after washing my hair, it’s so freakin cold. He says he’ll fix it on Saturday, Oct. 27th - my birthday. I think woohoo, cool birthday present, a nice hot shower! He has a key to my flat so I purposely spend all day out to return to what I hope will be the great result. And this is it:

This is inside my kitchen cupboard. No, the kitchen is not in the bathroom. And it’s not in the hallway, either. Go figure.

So it was that time again - time to see the folks in the homeland and take care of some business. Did the usual travelocity.com, orbitz.com, expedia.com, etc. search for the cheapest flights and found a decent flight for 460 euros. Downside: the airline was KLM (Dutch, better than Iceland but worse than Lufthansa and definitely much worse than British Airways). Even downer side: it stopped in Schiphol, which should be called Shithole, because that’s what it is. For 515 euros (incl. taxes and all) I see a flight with Virgin Atlantic stopping in Heathrow (my favorite stop - so many shops!) so I decide I’ve never flown Virgin, let’s give it a try. (more…)
